5 Items It Always Makes Sense to Carry

Some activities require specific outdoor gear. You need a harness, rope, and rock climbing shoes for a day of sport climbing, and you need a kayak, paddle, and a pfd for a day of floating. That harness doesn’t do any good in the water, and your paddle just gets in the way at the crag. Of course some items are useful no matter where you go or what you do.

Here are five items it always makes sense to carry whether you’re gearing up for a hike, climbing trip, day at the river, a weekend of camping, or just a quick trip to the park.

1. Water bottle

Most people don’t drink enough water during an average day, and you need even more water when you’re being active. Sometimes water isn’t readily available. You don’t want to get dehydrated, so be sure to pack a water bottle.

2. Hammock

The more you carry a hammock, the more you’ll start appreciating it. Hammocks offer a nice relaxing way to enjoy the outdoors. It’s arguably the lightest and most packable type of seating you can carry, and it works as a ground cover in a pinch.

3. Pack

No outing is too small for a daypack. Having a small daypack allows you to carry every thing you need to be prepared, but it also enables you to carry things back with you. This could be trash that you pick up along the trail, mementos you find out in nature, or a few snacks at the store for your bike ride.

4. Notebook and a pen

We live in a digital age, but a pen and pad still have their place. Conserve your battery life and enjoy a more sensory experience with a physical notebook and pen.

Leave a note, write down a great idea, document your day, or practice sketch art. We carry Rite in the Rain notebooks and pens, which are designed for the worst weather conditions.

5. Shell

It always makes sense to pack a waterproof shell. Of course, this will keep you dry in the event of a sudden shower, but a rain jacket is useful even if there isn’t any rain in the forecast. A rain jacket will help block the wind, provides a little protection from brambles and brush, and adds a little bit of warmth when the sun goes down.
