Ways to Prevent Tick Bites

You’re going to come across your fair share of ticks if you get outdoors during the spring and summer months. Ticks are gross, their bites are painful, and they can carry diseases that you don’t want to mess around with. Fortunately there are ways to prevent tick bites.

Wear insect repellent

There are many different types of insect repellent with different active ingredients. Whichever kind you choose, wearing insect repellent is an easy way to prevent tick bites.

Apply permetherin

Treat your clothing, tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, and gear with permetherin to help keep ticks, mosquitoes, and other insects away.

Permetherin actually kills ticks and insects without harming your skin, and these treatments provide up to 6 weeks or 6 washings worth of protection.

You can actually buy some outdoor apparel – leg gaiters, shirts, and pants – that come with Insect Shield, which is a permetherin treatment.

Wear light colors

It’s not true that light colors make you invisible to ticks. They do, however, make it easier for you to spot ticks.

Seeing ticks means that you can remove the them and prevent tick bites.

Stay covered

Wear clothing that covers your skin; this means shirts with long sleeves and pants. The more covered you are, the more difficult it is for ticks to get under your clothing and bite you.

Tuck and cinch

For maximum tick bite prevention, tuck your shirt into your pants, tuck your pants into your socks, and tape up any openings in your clothes.  m

You may look silly doing it, and most people probably won’t go to these lengths, but it makes it even more difficult for ticks to get under your clothing.

Stay out of tick town

You can always tell where the ticks are hanging out; shady areas with tall grass and thick vegetation. Ticks can lurk anywhere, but staying on trails and out of fields will help out a lot.

Do a tick check

Sometimes you can’t prevent tick bites. Always check yourself for ticks after you spend time outside, and remove them ASAP. Infections from Lyme disease are unlikely if ticks are removed before 36 hours.
