Hone Your Outdoor Skills

As an outdoor gear store we definitely promote being well-equipped for your time out in nature. We’re firm believers in having the right tool for the job. That’s why we’re here, after all. We want to make sure that you have all of the gear and equipment you need to stay safe, prepared, and comfortable outdoors.

Outdoor gear can make or break your time out in nature. Gear can mean the difference between restful Z’s and tossing and turning for 8 hours in the cold. Your boots can mean the difference between a joyful hike and painful blisters. A backpacking stove can mean a hot meal instead of a fistful of granola.

It’s not all about the gear, though. Your outdoor gear and equipment is, of course, important, but you can’t neglect your outdoor skills.

Sometimes outdoor skills are just neat, or good ways to pass the time. But sometimes having the right outdoor skills can replace gear, or even save your life.

Let’s use a knife – the quintessential outdoor survival tool – as an example.

  • Having that knife is good, but a dull knife won’t do you any favors.
  • Knowing how to sharpen a knife is an important outdoor skill.
  • Having the skill to sharpen a knife in the backcountry is even better.

Both the gear and outdoor skills are important in the example.

Here are a few outdoor skills that you should brush up on. Having these skills in your arsenal could save your skin, give you peace of mind, or just give you something to do around the campsite.

Identifying the flora in your area is a fun and useful skill. You can find lots of basic plant identification information online, but your better off getting a guide for your specific region. We carry great flora and fauna identification guides in store!
