Enjoy the Off-season

Photo credit: Gideon Haden ChomphosyThere’s a reason it’s called the off-season. The traffic and crowds you associate with popular campgrounds and hiking trails during the summer tend to thin out during the late fall and winter seasons. Even the mild winters in Northwest Arkansas can scare off fair-weather nature lovers. Don’t let cooler temperatures keep you from enjoying nature. The off-season is the perfect time to enjoy camping, hiking, and backpacking.

No fees

There are countless places to camp in Northwest Arkansas, but few are as lovely or iconic as the Buffalo National River. The off-season is one of the best times to hit the Buffalo. Not only is there less competition for a campsite (just try to find a spot at Kyle’s Landing on a Friday afternoon during the summer), but there aren’t any camping fees during the off-season along the Buffalo.

Water and electrical amenities are shut off from November 15th – March 15th, so you can camp at Buffalo National River campgrounds free of charge. Just make sure you bring your own water.

Fewer crowds

Lots of people are hesitant about getting outdoors when it’s cold.  Hiking in the cold, or camping in the cold, can be uncomfortable and challenging, and many aren’t willing to bear the burden.

This just means you can enjoy long stretches of trail to yourself, and have a little extra elbow room while camping at popular Arkansas campgrounds.

Fewer crawlies

The off-season means fewer run-ins with snakes, bugs, and insects such as ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes.

Stay cool

Take advantage of cool temperatures while hiking or backpacking. In many ways colder weather makes hiking more enjoyable. It’s easier to stay cool and manage your body temperature while hiking during the off-season rather than the hot summer months.

Get equipped

Spending time in nature during the off-season is the way to go. The trick is staying comfortable, however. Having the right outdoor gear is essential to enjoying the off-season.

Invest in the right cold weather outdoor gear to stay warm and comfortable. Casic cold weather outdoor gear you’ll need includes.
