Battlefield Trail, Prairie Grove, Arkansas

There are plenty of great hikes in Northwest Arkansas, but sometimes you want a trail that offers a little more than a ramble. One great option when you have out of town guests or you’re looking for a day trip for the whole family is Battlefield Trail in Prairie Grove.

The trail is just about one mile, and it’s paved. It’s an easy walk, but has enough variety to keep your interest. You’ll pass through the woods, enjoy views across the fields, and have a chance to see a 19th century Arkansas village.

The trail loops around Prairie Grove Battlefield Park, where you’ll find historic buildings to explore as well as a historical museum that’s worth a visit. The park is dedicated to the memory of a Civil War battle which took place in December of 1862.

Stop by the museum and get an overview of the battleground before you start the hike. There’s a brochure available at the museum that gives you lots of information about the events of the battle, connecting those events with the sights you see along the trail.

You’ll read about the events that took place at the buildings and viewpoints along the trail, and you can easily imagine how it might have looked throughout the day of the battle. The buildings at the park include a church, a school, several homes, and other village buildings, so the focus doesn’t have to be on the battle if that’s not the part of history that interests you.

At the same time, it’s an opportunity to learn about an important part of our nation’s story.

It’s a beautiful trail, too.

The park has a playground for kids and plenty of picnic spaces. Take a day and enjoy it!
