Day hiking essentials

  1. Every hiker needs a sturdy pair of hiking footwear. Invest in a pair of hiking boots or a pair of trail running shoes.
  2. Cotton socks don’t cut it on the trail. We recommend the comfort and support of merino wool hiking socks.
  3. Sun screen isn’t just for the light complected. Sun screen prevents sun burns, but it also prevents skin cancer.
  4. Chapped lips can ruin your time on the trail. Lip balm protects your lips from sun, heat, and wind.
  5. Bugs suck, and they also bite. Insect repellent keeps mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers away.
  6. Food is to hikers as gas is to cars. Pack some hiking snacks to keep hiking strong!
  7. You’ve got to stay hydrated. Bring plenty of water, and consider a water filter for longer hikes.
  8. Whether you took a wrong turn, overestimated your pace, or you just lose track of time, getting caught on the trail after dark can be dangerous. A headlamp can save your life.
  9. Pack a basic first aid kit for minor cuts, illness, and injury.
  10. Never leave home without a pocket knife.
  11. You can use a bandana for everything from water filtration to first aid.

  13. Preserve your vision and look stellar doing it with a pair of sunglasses.
  14. Hats offer great protection from sun and rain.
  15. You, of course, need something to put all of your hiking gear in. Be sure to bring a hiking backpack.
