How do you hike farther? There are a number of things you can do to increase the distance you’re able to hike. A regular workout regimen, a dedicated hiking training, and experience on the trail can all help you hike farther. Of course, these things come with time. There are ways, however, to immediately increase how far you can hike. Here’s a look at 5 ways to maximize your mileage on the trail!

Find the right trails

Choose hiking trails that are within your abilities. Most trails are categorized as easy, moderate, or strenuous to indicate the trail’s difficulty. Check the difficulty rating as well as elevation change before choosing a hike. If you’re not in tip-top shape, you might want to stick to easy or moderate trails with minimal elevation change until you’re confident in your level of fitness.

Hydration and nutrition

Food and water are the equivalent to gas and oil in a car. Eat a good dinner the night before hiking, and get hydrated. Pound a hearty breakfast and hydrate in the morning before you hit the trail. It’s important to stay hydrated and nourished during the hike, as well. Hunger and dehydration lead to weakness and fatigue. Consume calories and drink plenty of water to keep going strong on the trail.

Pack lighter

One of the biggest mistakes people make in hiking or backpacking is carrying too much stuff. Eliminate anything that’s unnecessary from your hiking pack. Every ounce counts, especially when you’re clocking high mileage. Removing a pound or two from your pack can significantly increase how far you can hike. Pace yourself

This is especially important on multi-day backpacking trips. Slow and steady wins the race. Over-exert yourself early on and you may find it difficult to finish out your hike. The average pace for a day hiker is 3 miles per hour. The average pace for a backpacker is 2 miles per hour. Other factors such as heat, terrain, and elevation can slow you down, however. If you find that you’re really booking it, and you’re not an experienced hiker, slow down a bit and enjoy your time in nature!

Get the right footwear

Wool hiking socks and a good pair of hiking boots or trail shoes are a must have. You will be surprised at how much farther you can hike with the right foot wear. You want good hiking boots or trail shoes that provide good support and protection. Sure, you can technically hike in any type of footwear, but if you want to maximize your distance, you need to invest in the right footwear.
