5 Things to Remember for Fall Camping

Fall leaves in ArkansasSummer is finally tapering down, and cool fall weather will be here before you know it. Crisp autumn air and a staggering display of color makes fall one of the best seasons to go camping in the Ozarks. Of course, camping in the fall can be a little bit tricky. Here are 5 things you should remember about fall camping to help make sure you have a good time.

Temperatures vary during the fall

The temperature can change drastically over the course of a day. Don’t just check the high temperature and set out on your way in a flannel shirt. It an be chilly in the morning, warm in the afternoon, and down right frigid at night.

Layers are key for fall camping. Make sure that you have a good base layer, a warm insulating layer, and a jacket or shell. This will help you handle changing temperatures throughout the day.

It can get cold at night

Again, temperature can be deceptive during the fall. a t-shirt might be all you need to sit in the sun on a warm fall day, but you need to make sure that you’re prepared for when that sun goes down.

A warm sleeping bag, and an insulating sleeping pad are a must for fall camping. Make sure that you know how to choose the right sleeping bag for your needs.

Insects aren’t gone quite yet

If you hate bug bites, consider bringing insect repellent to keep ticks and mosquitoes away. Bugs won’t show up in thick clouds like they do during the summer months, but they will stick around until we get a proper frost.

Make sure you have everything you need to start a fire

Camping without a campfire is just sitting around in the woods, waiting to go home. Bring whatever your skill set requires to get fire going, whether that’s flint and steel, fatwood and matches, or lighter fluid and a lighter. It’s also smart to bring some firewood, just in case your campsite has been picked clean.

Hot meals and beverages will help keep you warm

A piping hot bowl of chili, and a warm mug of cider will chase the chills away. Plan ahead and bring meals and beverages that will help keep you warm when the temperature dips down low.
