Olympics Start in Rio

RioThe 2016 Summer Olympic Games start today in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Even if you’re not a sports fan, it’s fun to keep up with the Olympics and cheer for your country! The competitions include a little bit of everything. You can watch table tennis showdowns and epic finishes along the track. As an outdoor sporting goods store, we have to wonder what it would be like to see some popular outdoor activities brought to the Olympic Games.

There are a lot of outdoor activities that are perfect for the Olympics. Kayaking is already an Olympic event, and there’s been talk of adding climbing to the Games. And it would definitely be pretty epic to see people race to the top of a 14er. However, there are plenty of outdoor recreation activities that would… be a little lackluster in the Olympics.

Here are 5 popular outdoor recreation activities that wouldn’t cut it in the Olympics.

Who’s up for Olympic camping?

Camping is a lot of fun, but watching other people camp sounds pretty dull. Also, it’s hard to imagine making camping competitive, and scoring it would be even more challenging. Olympic camping is something that should never be.

It’s time for Olympic hiking!

This one actually seems plausible. Olympic race walking is maybe the strangest event at the Olympics. But just imagine putting those speed walkers on some of the world’s most popular hiking trails! We would definitely watch that.

Let’s all watch Olympic birdwatching!

Birdwatching requires a level of patience and dedication that is hard to come by. Now imagine watching people watching birds…

Are you ready for Olympic hammocking?

Yes, the noun that became a verb. Hanging around in hammocks has become crazy popular over the years. So popular, in fact, that lounging in a hammock is now referred to as “hammocking”. Again, it’s hard to imagine how you would judge this as a competition. Maybe speed, technique, and execution.

What do you know about Olympic caving?

There would definitely be some visibility issues with this event. And racing through a dark, rocky cave seems a little too dangerous for this event really take off.
