Backpacks for Biking

Vintage bicycleWhen you need a tactical survival pack, a large multi-day backpack for your thru-hike, or even just a small daypack for day hikes, you come to see us at Uncle Sam’s Safari Outfitters in Fayetteville, Arkansas. We sell military surplus, camping equipment, and hiking supplies, so this makes sense. But when you need backpack for biking, we probably aren’t the first ones that come to mind. This also makes sense, considering that we don’t sell bicycles.

Although we do not carry bicycles, we do have plenty of packs that are ideal for mountain bikers, bike commuters, and weekend warriors alike.

What makes a backpack good for cycling? There are three main things to look for when choosing a backpack for biking.

  • Look at the overall design of the pack. You want a low profile backpack that keeps the load weight balanced. This will help prevent awkward shifts in weight on turns. A lower profile backpack will also create less drag — which is especially important when riding downhill.
  • The size of the pack is also important. Typically, you want a relatively small backpack for biking. Think a maximum of 25 liters. The size of your pack will depend on your activity, however. If you’re mountain biking, you won’t need to cart around as much stuff as someone who is commuting to and from work. Some prefer a minimalist pack that can hold their water and maybe a couple of energy bars after a crash, while others like to have a more spacious pack with room for a laptop, helmet, and a jacket.
  • Pack features are also important. You probably want a pack that is H20 compatible, meaning it has a slot for a water reservoir. Other features to look for include: easy access pockets, slash pockets, waterproof pack materials, padded straps, mesh back panels, reflective materials, or safety light attachment points. Again, the type of cycling you are doing will dictate the feature that you want in a backpack.

We carry great bike-friendly packs from brands like Deuter, CamelBak, Kelty, and more. Of course, if you need a new backpack for your upcoming backpacking trip, or you’re looking to revamp your bugout bag with a new tactical pack, we’ve got you covered in those area as well. Next time you’re in Fayetteville, stop by and see our selection!
