U.S. National Park Service Centennial

Yellowstone - Lower Falls2016 is a special year for the United States National Park Service. The National Park Service was created in 1916 through the National Park Service Organic Act, making this year the agency’s 100th anniversary. The NPS is responsible for managing all 59 national parks as well as a number of historic and conservative sites and national monuments.

If you’ve ever been to one of our country’s 59 national parks, you know just how important the NPS is to the United States. You have to keep in mind that you’re not necessarily going to get a peaceful, solitary experience in the wilderness. National parks collectively have tens of millions of visitors from around the globe, but the popularity of our national parks in no way trivializes the importance of the natural beauty contained within.

The network of parks that runs throughout the country has helped preserve and protect a number of iconic natural wonders unique to the United States. Just thinking of Old Faithful, the Delicate Arch, or Yosemite Valley simultaneously conjures images of baseball and apple pie. In other words, national parks are closely intertwined with American culture.

The NPS will be celebrating 100 years throughout 2016, but August 25th marks the official date of the centennial. This isn’t an exclusive party, either. Anyone and everyone should take part in celebrating a century of stewardship with the National Park Service. Whether you’ve never been to a national park, you haven’t been since you were dragged along on a family road trip as a child, or you make a point to visit a new park every year, you should make extra efforts to enjoy one – or many – of our country’s national parks in 2016.

Go and visit a national park this year. They are truly special, and the centennial is the perfect occasion to visit. We would love to help you get outfitted for your trip. Whether you’re doing a driving tour of Yellowstone, climbing a 14er in Rocky Mountain National Park, or exploring the Yosemite backcountry, we can help make sure you have everything that you need.
