Fall mornings can be a good reminder that cold weather isn’t far off. You want to make sure that you have the right apparel to stay warm and comfortable while you’re outside.

Maybe you’ve had your jacket for close to a decade, and you’re on the fence as to whether or not it’s time for a new jacket. And sometimes it’s easy to get sucked in to thinking you need a new jacket because an outdoor gear company introduces a new color, or implements a new type of insulation. Here are some things to consider that can help you make your decision.

Is your jacket still in good condition? – Take a look at your current jacket. Is it stained? Do the zippers still work? Is it full of holes? Is the insulation still lofty so it keeps you warm? If your jacket fulfills all the requirements that a jacket should fulfill, you probably don’t need a new one.

Is your jacket in good enough condition? – Maybe having a working zipper isn’t high on your list of priorities. Maybe you don’t mind that your jacket doesn’t keep you as warm as it used to. Maybe you don’t mind having a few holes from standing too close to a campfire. These minor inconveniences might not be worth the cost of a new jacket. However, if your jacket isn’t performing up to your desired standards, it’s probably time to look for a new one.

Consider layering before buying a completely new jacket. If you just want to stay warm, think about layering. Putting on an extra sweatshirt, or a warm base layer could be a better alternative to buying a new jacket. You could also consider buying a thinner, lightweight jacket as a layering piece, and save some money instead of dishing out dough on a bigger jacket.

What do you do if it rains? How will your jacket hold up in the rain? Is it waterproof? Is your jacket too bulky to wear a rain jacket over it? If it rains, are your options get soaked or stay at home? If you want to have the option of getting outside in inclement weather, but your jacket doesn’t lend itself to that, it might be time to get a new jacket.

Do you need a more technical jacket? Having the right equipment and specialized clothing can make your outdoor experiences more enjoyable. If you are looking to hike, climb, or bike in cold weather, you want a jacket that provides insulation while also being breathable. Consider a technical softshell jacket.
