5 Tips For Staying Warm in the Fall

Mountain Khakis FlannelIt’s starting to feel like fall in Northwest Arkansas. Temperatures are dropping and the leaves are starting to change. The further we get into fall, the cooler it’s going to get, so here are five tips for staying warm this fall!

Layering is key to staying comfortable in the fall. Some days call for just a couple of layers, while others may call for four. Mornings and evening can get pretty chilly, but you might still get toasty in the middle of the day or during your hike. Layering is the best way to help you regulate your body temperature. Start with a base layer, followed by your insulating layer(s), and then finally a shell if necessary. If it’s drizzling or windy, you will definitely want an outer shell. Softshell jackets are perfect for active pursuits in questionable weather.

Fall can be damp. The Ozarks are known for dense fog, floating mist, and soft rains that can chill you to the bone. Make sure you’re wearing the right clothing for outdoor activities. In other words, don’t wear blue jeans and a cotton shirt. Synthetic materials are great for their quick drying capabilities and maintaining their insulating properties even when wet. Wool is also good at providing insulation when wet.

Go ahead and pop on a flannel. Flannel shirts aren’t the most technical garments, but they are a toasty fall staple. On a cool dry day, you might not need much more than a base layer and a flannel button-down.

Keep your extremities warm. You don’t necessarily have to wait until winter to wear your hats and gloves. If you’re cold, then it’s cold enough to break out the winter gear. Don’t forget your wool socks. Warm socks are a must have in the fall.

If all else fails, carry hand warmers. Fall nights can get cold enough to make even the warmest-natured person shiver. Get disposable hand warmers or a reusable one to add a little extra warmth on those cold fall camping trips.
