Backpacking can also push you to your limits and help you realize that you are capable of more than you previously thought. But as great as backpacking can be, there are a number of things that can ruin a backpacking trip, or at the very least, make trip less enjoyable. Here are 5 backpacking mistakes that you should avoid.

Most experienced backpacker know not to pack cans when backpacking, but if you’re new to the game, you might not realize that carrying cans is a bad idea. A can of soup might seem like a really convenient meal option for a backpacking trip, but carrying canned food while backpacking isn’t all that practical. Canned food is typically going to be heavier than dehydrated or instant options, plus cans tend to take up more space. You also have to consider that you have to pack out what you pack in. You don’t want a bunch of empty cans rattling around in your pack by the end of your trip.

Wearing boots out of the box is a big time rookie mistake. You need time to break your hiking boots in before putting serious mileage on them. Wearing brand new hiking boots is a good way to get some serious blisters.

Maybe the biggest mistake you can make while backpacking is not bringing enough water. Staying hydrated is key while hiking, and you have to be sure to bring plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Carrying a water filter or water purification tablets is a good backup plan.

Even seasoned backpackers make the mistake of forgetting to check the weather. Knowing the temperatures, chance of precipitation, sun coverage, etc. will help you know what gear to bring, and what type of clothing to pack. Always err on the side of caution, and pack for the worst case scenario.

The heavier your pack is, the more difficult your hike will be. Packing too much can make your backpacking experience more challenging than necessary. Different people have different needs and require different levels of comfort. Each person’s packing list will be different, but avoid packing more than is necessary for you.
