5 Excuses Not to Go Outside (and Why You Should Never Use Them)

ZionOne thing that stops people from getting outside as much as they would like, is excuses. Here are 5 common excuses, and 5 reasons why shouldn’t use them.

“It’s too hot outside” -or- “It’s too cold outside”. This may be the most common excuse people use to stay indoors. If you stayed at home any time the temperature got a little bit chilly, or a little too toasty, you would never make it outside. If it’s hot, plan your outings early in the morning or in the evening when it’s cooler. If it’s cold, wear layers and keep moving.

“Looks like rain”. How many times have you stayed indoors because there was a chance of rain, only to look out your window and see the sun shining down? A chance of rain doesn’t necessarily mean it will rain, and you shouldn’t let a little water keep you from enjoying your time outside. Grab your rain jacket or poncho before heading out the door.

“I have no one to go with”. This excuse only works if you’re wanting to climb a multi-pitch route. Solitude in nature can be very refreshing. It gives you time to think, and truly appreciate the beauty of the great outdoors. If you’re going to head out on your own, be sure to let someone know your plans. Text a friend or leave a note for someone telling them where you’re going and when you will be back.

“I just want to relax”. You’ve got a day off from work or school, and you want to unwind. That’s understandable. But relaxing doesn’t have to mean sitting on the couch, watching cartoons, and eating Cheetos, and going outside doesn’t have to mean hiking 20 miles or summiting Mt. Everest. Take it easy with a leisurely day hike, relax at the river, or find a nice shady spot under a big tree. Blue skies and bird songs make a wonderfully relaxing combination.

“I’m not feeling up to it”. This is the excuse you use if you don’t have any other excuse. You may not be feeling it at the moment, but after you take a few steps on the trail, or work the first few moves of your climb, you can’t help but feel it.
