It’s Finally Time to Ditch Those Disposable Plastic Bottles

Water bottlesYou’ve been hearing it for years: bottled water is bad. So why are you still buying single use water bottles at the store? It’s time to finally get a reusable water bottle and stop buying bottled water.

Here’s why.

Disposable water bottles are wasteful. First, you have to consider the energy costs involved with making bottled water. It takes 17 million barrels of oil to produce enough bottles of water for U.S. demand. If the bottle ends up in the trash, it takes up space in a landfill. One bottle may not seem like much, but the average American consumes 167 bottles of water each year, and more than half of those bottles end up in the landfill. Even if the bottle happens to make it into the recycling bin, there are still energy costs required to melt down all those plastic bottles, and while better than simply throwing those bottles away, the recycling process is still unnecessarily wasteful.

Bottled water is expensive. A 24 pack of 17 ounce bottles can cost around $15. That case of bottled water translates, roughly, to just over 400 ounces of water. Now, it’s recommended that an adult males drink around 100 ounces of water every day. So that means the fifteen dollars you spent on bottled water keeps you adequately hydrated for only 4 days. You can buy a water bottle for less than 15 dollars, and it will keep you hydrated forever.

Do you think bottled water is better than tap water? Well it’s not. It’s reported that only 55% of bottled water comes from natural springs. The rest, including water from big brands like Aquafina and Dasani, are just purified tap water. If it makes you feel better, you filter or purify your own tap water and put it into a reusable bottle.

If you’re convinced that you should stop buying disposable bottles, it’s time to get a reusable bottle instead. There are a lot of different options.

The super sturdy, BPA-free Nalgene bottles are an extremely popular option. You won’t be able to walk a college campus in America without spotting a least one Nalgene bottle. CamelBak is another popular brand that makes reusable plastic bottles.

Stainless steel water bottles are good alternative to those who are wary of plastic. There are a lot of companies making metal bottles these days, Klean Kanteen is one of the big brands. If you like to keep your water extra cold, you can purchase an insulated bottled from a brand like Hydro Flask to keep your water cool on a hot day.

If you don’t trust plastic but hate the taste of metal, you can even buy a glass water bottle. Glass bottles are not quite as durable as plastic or metal, but your water will be totally free of any funky taste. CamelBak is just one of the brands that’s making reusable glass bottles.
