Getting to Know MOLLE

MOLLE packMOLLE is an incredibly versatile, yet simple, system for customizing packs, tactical vests, and other gear. Pronounced like the name, “Molly”, the acronym MOLLE stands for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. As the name suggests, the system allows for equipment customization with minimal weight.

The MOLLE system was first introduced back in 1997 for military use. Today, a number of militaries from around the world use the carrying system, including NATO armed forces, the British Army, and the United States Army. The MOLLE system replaced the old All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment (ALICE) system that dated back to the 1960’s.

The ALICE system, like the MOLLE system, allows for customization of packs, load-bearing vests, and the like, however ALICE is not nearly as versatile as MOLLE.

It’s surprising how simple something so useful can be. The Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment system gives the wearer almost endless customization options with the simplicity of snaps and loops.

MOLLE uses bar tacked daisy chains made of nylon webbing. Since this system isn’t limited by fixed attachment points, it can accommodate any number of additional gear combinations. Pouches, canteens, and other MOLLE system add-ons have a snap closure backing that attaches to through daisy chain loops.

But the system isn’t limited to MOLLE compatible equipment. Since the system is essentially just a series of nylon web loops, you can attach gear with a carabiner, or even lash your equipment to your vest or pack through the daisy chains.

This system has proven to be so simple, functional, and versatile, that it is finding its way into non-military equipment. A number of outdoor and lifestyle companies are incorporating MOLLE onto their bags and packs.

If you’ve been looking for a MOLLE pack or vest, or you simply just want to check it out, stop by the store. We carry a wide range of packs, bags, pouches, and other military surplus that are equipped with the MOLLE system.
