Johnny Appleseed Day

Johnny AppleseedAt some point in your life, you’ve probably heard of Johnny Appleseed. Maybe your grandfather told you exaggerated stories about an apple-loving man who wore a pot on his head, or maybe you were told the tales in grade school while enjoying freshly cut apple slices. These stories tend to be larger than life, elevating Johnny Appleseed to the same status in American tradition as Paul Bunyan. However, Johnny Appleseed was more than a myth, he was an actual historical figure. Today is Johnny Appleseed day, and to honor an American icon we’re going to give a little history lesson on the man behind the myth.

Now, while we do love apples here at Uncle Sam’s, that’s not the inspiration for writing this post. We also love the great outdoors and going on adventures, and so did John Chapman, otherwise known as Johnny Appleseed.

While some folk tales might have you believe that Johnny Appleseed was born with a fistful of apple seeds in one hand and a tin pot in the other, that’s not the case. John Chapman was born on September 22nd, 1774, in Leominster, Massachusetts, under very normal circumstances. He didn’t grow up to aimlessly wander the frontier, haphazardly tossing apple seeds wherever he pleased, blessing the American countryside with countless apple orchards. However, he did travel all through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and West Virginia, planting nurseries.

While the myth of Johnny Appleseed, might be an exaggerated account of John Chapman’s life, there’s no doubt that John, or Johnny, was an outdoorsman through and through. He lived a nomadic life on the American frontier. He saw many incredible and pristine locations, and was dedicated to environmental conservation. His life wasn’t mythical, but it was no less remarkable.

So, in honor of Johnny Appleseed Day, embrace his adventurer’s spirit and go on some adventures of your own!
