Great Fall Ozarks Day Trips

fall-driveFall is a sensory season. You can see the leaves changing, feel the temperature dropping — the air even tastes different. When fall rolls around you can feel it. With that change in season comes a desire to get outdoors. Luckily we have plenty of amazing things to do in and around the Ozarks when you get the itch to go outdoors.

  • Horseshoe Canyon Ranch – HCR or The Ranch as we like to call it, is home to some world class rock climbing and it’s right in our backyard. Horseshoe Canyon Ranch has been featured in climbing videos and been visited by nearly every professional climber that you could name. From burly boulder problems to technical rope routes and old school trad, The Ranch has it all. There’s a $5 day use fee which seems negligible when you consider the rock quality.
  • Cowell – The township of Cowell out Highway 7 is another gem of a climbing area tucked in the Ozarks. The main bouldering area is known as Fountain Red, or Font Red, or Font and is home to everything from V0 warm-ups to more than formidable double digit climbs. The Invasion wall is where most of the sport climbing goes down and is considered one of the best in the state. Cowell may very well be the most scenic climbing area in Arkansas, especially in the fall, and warrants a visit for hiking nearly as much as it does climbing.
  • Devil’s Den – This state park may have seen a dip in visitors in recent years due to the caves closing, but Devil’s Den is still worth a visit for the hiking. Devil’s Den has everything from quick day hikes to longer trails and is beautiful at every step. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the park in the 1930’s. The history adds to the experience.
  • Whitaker Point – Also known as Hawksbill Crag, this may be the most picturesque and recognizable location in Arkansas. The beak-like outcropping has been the subject of countless Arkansas ads, postcards, and calenders. The view from Hawksbill during the fall is nothing short of lovely, and the trail is a measly 3 miles round trip.
