Camping with Hand Sanitizer

germsHand sanitizer is one of those things that people either love or hate. You either think that hand sanitizer will lead to the evolution of giant man-eating super viruses or that hand sanitizer would have halted the bubonic plague. Regardless of your thoughts on how effective it is at killing germs, hand sanitizer can be extremely useful in the outdoors. Here are some of the main reasons you will want to start camping with hand sanitizer.

  • If you’re the type of person who feels like it’s not camping without a fire, you should run to the store and buy some hand sanitizer right now. Hand sanitizer makes for a great fire starter. It’s essentially alcohol, so it’s extremely flammable. Have your kindling ready, squeeze a bit of sanitizer in the fire pit, and light it. The sanitizer should burn long enough for you to get your fire started with ease.
  • Hand sanitizer isn’t just for your hands. Use it to sanitize your cooking utensils before or after meals. This isn’t an ideal alternative to washing them, but if you don’t have soap and water it’s better than nothing.
  • If you get a cut or a scrape, you can use hand sanitizer to disinfect a wound.
  • No matter how cautious you are, sometimes you just can’t avoid getting into poison ivy. Rinsing your hands arms, legs, or whatever with hand sanitizer can help remove the oils that cause reactions.
  • When you’re out in the woods for days at a time, you can get a funk about you. Scented deodorants can attract mosquitoes or other unwanted wildlife. Unscented hand sanitizer can be a good alternative to using deodorant.
  • Maybe the least surprising use for hand sanitizer is… sanitizing your hands! While camping, you’re going to be messing with all kinds of stuff. A little dirt never hurt anyone, but a lot of dirt can make you sick. Being sick in the woods is no joke.

Whether you think hand sanitizer is helpful or harmful, camping with hand sanitizer is definitely a good idea. It’s lightweight and multipurpose. What more can you ask for?
