Mt. Kessler, The Hidden Treasure of Fayetteville

Mount Kessler Map Mt. Kessler comprises 1,000 acres in the city limits of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and another 500 acres outside of city limits. While it’s not exactly a park yet because it’s mostly made up of private lands, there is a group working towards preserving the area as an urban forest with hiking trails. Even though the lands are privately owned, you can access them if you fill out a waiver of liability and deliver it to Frank Sharp, one of the area owners and facilitator of the Mt. Kessler Greenways group. In the last few weeks, the City of Fayetteville has started making moves to buy all of the property and turn it into city park area and a vote recently made that a reality.

What will you find at the Mt. Kessler Greenways? Lots of trails perfect for hiking, running, and biking. The slopes are steep and there are beautiful rock formations in different areas along the trail. It makes for some really fun backwoods adventure, right in our own backyard.

To get to the Mt. Kessler trails, take Martin Luther King Boulevard out towards Farmington and take Smokehouse Trail Road on the left. You’ll see one small trail behind the now closed Ozark Smokehouse, but keep journeying down the road to the trailhead. At this point, you’ll be at the start of a much longer trail than the small loop behind the Ozark Smokehouse. The trailhead is marked with a sign and a trail log box. Be sure to sign in and then get to enjoying the trails.

We’re happy that the City of Fayetteville cares just as much as we do about preserving green areas and making them accessible for use as parks. So go show how much you appreciate the City’s moves to keep Mt. Kessler preserved by doing just what you should—using the trails in a respectful way so everyone including wildlife can enjoy the land.
