2013 Fat Tire Festival

Eureka Springs-Chuck55This weekend marks the annual Eureka Springs Fat Tire Festival. Whether you’re a biker or not, it’s fun just to watch the events and cheer on competitors and then go do some shopping in Eureka.

If you’re a biker, it’s a ton of fun to participate in one of the biggest and best known cycling events around the country. And if you’re not ready for a competitive event, there are some that are just for fun, either up and down the mountains or through the backwoods. At the end of Friday and Saturday, there are after-parties to enjoy too. Really something for everyone!

No matter if you’re competing, having fun, or just there for a weekend full of cheering and pampering, a lot of people camp out over the weekend and continue the revelry into the night. You’ll want to bring some extra supplies in addition to the normal camping gear list so be sure to pack your biking gear and a couple icepacks for the bruises you’ll inevitably suffer over the weekend.

At Lake Leatherwood where most of the events are held, there are also plenty of other things to do over the weekend in addition to the bike events. Trails that aren’t being used for the Fat Tire Festival can make a great diversion, or bring a kayak or canoe for a quick dip into the water to paddle around and get away from the crowds. Part of the city parks systems,  Lake Leatherwood was built in the 1940s by the WPA and features an 85 acre lake.

Overall, it’s a great festival that’s perfect for everyone and you can take along the whole family for a weekend full of fun. The kids can participate in a children’s event, you can watch the professionals take on the obstacles and bounce from one boulder to the next, let the grownups go shopping for a few hours, and have a family friendly weekend.
