Knife Care

knife-care-by-chris-pennyKeeping your knife in good condition is a lot as much about how you use it and how you maintain it as much as it is about the knife’s quality itself. Taking care of your knives will keep them around forever — you could even pass them down to your children if you take good care of your knives.

We have memories of our grandparents sitting out on the porch with a whetstone, listening to the sounds of knives being sharpened and the smell of oils. Take good care of your knife and it’ll take good care of you!

Although you’ve probably upgraded from the old Swiss Army knife you had as a kid, the same safety rules still apply with handling knifes. Never cut towards yourself, pass it closed to someone else when possible, and never brandish a knife at someone, even if you’re just playing.

Cutting and Use Care

  • Avoid cutting on hard surfaces, like rock, conrete or metal. Over time this will roll the edge of your knife over or chip it, making your knife very dull quickly.
  • Keep the blade protected, either in the sheath it came with or closed.
  • Never drop your knife into the sink or onto the ground — you’ll dull the tip and could even injure others.

Cleaning Care

  • Always clean your knife with mild soap and water after use.
  • Dry throughly and never store your knife where it’ll meet up with moisture.
  • Consider coating your knife’s blade in oil for long term storage to prevent condensation on the blade from causing rust spots. Not all knives need or should use this technique, so check your manufacturer’s instructions.

Sharpening Care

  • Sharpen knifes carefully to make sure you keep the same edge as when you bought the blade.
  • Sharpen regularly to maintain your sharp edge.
  • Seek out professional help if you’re unsure and send your knives off to be resharpened.

We offer a wide range of knives:

While all of these different knives have different benefits, knowing which is right for you can be a challenge. If you’re thinking about buying a new knife, we can help you select the best one for your needs.
