What’s in Your Pack? The Essentials List

whats-in-my-pack-by-brewbooksDo you ever want to peek in someone else’s pack?  What you carry on a hiking trip may be very personal. Some people can’t imagine heading out even for the day without something to read, others must have a camera even for short hikes, and others will go on a long weekend with only the most spartan collection of gear.

Here’s a list of the basics for an overnight hiking trip.

The Big Stuff

You’re not likely to forget these items:

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Food
  • Water
  • Clothing

If you’re into super lightweight hiking and want to go with just the clothes on your back, this is all you’ll need. If you’re really enthusiastic, you can ditch bringing water itself and stick with something to make water potable and a vessel to drink out of, like a water bottle and a steripen. Depending on the weather, insects, and your personal preferences, you can do without a tent. A hammock can be enough.

The Food Prep Stuff

You might plan to eat meal bars and sandwiches, but you’ll craving a hot meal soon. You’ll need to pack along some food prep supplies to make your dinner and giving some thought to what you plan on making will give you clues about what you need.

  • Fuel source & ignition
  • Cooking vessel
  • Cooking utensils
  • Cleaning supplies

Whether you want to cook over a wood fire that you’ve gathered or to use a camp stove, you’ll need some way to light it so be sure to bring matches or a lighter. If you’re packing light, do double duty with your cooking vessels and use them to eat too; otherwise you’ll want to bring something to eat on.

The Necessary Extras

The list below will keep you comfortable and make camping fun!

  • Toilet paper and hand shovel
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen and bug repellant
  • Map and compass
  • Flashlight
  • Emergency whistle
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Deodorant
  • Camera
  • Hand sanitizer gel
  • First aid kit
