Arkansas Adventure Programming Conference

The Arkansas Adventure Programming Conference took place at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch April 5-7, 2013.

Uncle Sam’s was there, of course. Here you can see our tent, right next to Leave No Trace. We had pretty much all left our tent to go over to their tent, which had food, but that was just a brief sojourn.

Mostly we were working hard all weekend.

Friday began with pre-conference workshops, followed by dinner and a party. The workshops included Climbing & Bouldering and Disc Golf, a couple of excellent options for recreation in Arkansas. In order to really get to know the things you need to know about these subjects, you have to get out there and experience them, which we did. climb

Saturday began with 6:30 a.m. yoga, which we didn’t attend, then breakfast and a roundtable in the lodge.

While we did not attend the early-morning yoga, we did make a point, at breakfast, of getting all the details from the stalwarts who went.

Presentation sessions and skills clinics filled Saturday, with topics including videography, whitewater paddling, trip planning, and more climbing and yoga and yoga for climbers just to make sure we got the point.

Kelty did a presentation on their excellent packs (which we carry at Uncle Sam’s), Leave No Trace gave a workshop on Outdoor Ethics, and there was a team-building workshop that centered on the value of goofiness in improving group dynamics.

This cerebral activity was followed by a Dutch Oven cook-off and dinner and further partying. We did our part in this important section of the conference.

Sunday included post-conference workshops on hiking and canoeing. These workshops involved hiking on the one hand and canoeing on the other.

As you can tell, this was all very hard work. It’s rough, but someone has to do all that hiking and canoeing, climbing and cooking off, eating and partying and hanging out at the tent swapping stories about cool gear. We care enough about you that we’re willing to be the ones to do it.

See you next year at the Arkansas Adventure Programming Conference — or any old time you care to come in at Uncle Sam’s in Evelyn Hills in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
