Lake Fayetteville

Lake FayettevilleIf you have “Get outdoors more” or “Be more active” on your list of New Year’s resolutions, you may be looking for a great place to hike, bike, or play sports. One of the first places we think of is Lake Fayetteville.

Lake Fayetteville is one of the oldest parks in the Fayetteville area, created in the late 1940s as a water source for our area. When Beaver Lake was tapped for that purpose ten years later, the lake turned into a recreational facility instead. Since then, the 458 acres around Lake Fayetteville have been turned into public park areas with something to do for everyone in the family.

Lake Fayetteville is not just one large park, but the combination of several. It includes Veterans Memorial Park on the south side of the lake, the boat dock and marina on the north, Lake Fayetteville Softball Complex, North Shore and the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks.

In addition to access to boating and fishing activities on both the north and south shores of the lake, there are also sand volleyball courts, playgrounds, horseshoe pits, pavilions and picnic areas, and a great trail system that takes advantage of the beautiful scenery of wooded areas and meadows. Available trails include a 5.5 mile nature trail around the lake itself and a 4.3 mile paved multi-use trail that is used by walkers and bicyclers and links to the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. An 18-hole disc golf course was created in 2005.

The marina located on the north shore of the lake includes a concession area and offers small items for sale such as fishing lures, maps, and souvenirs. There is a covered deck around the building that provides a great place to have lunch on a warm afternoon.

Geocachers will find about 14 caches in the Lake Fayetteville area, so be sure to take your gps along if you head out for the day. You might come home with treasure!
