Hiking and Biking Trails Discovery

Where can you look for your next favorite hiking or biking trail? Uncle Sam’s has some excellent books on the subject, including those by Tim Ernst, and maps as well. Stop by and pick some up, and you can probably also get some personal reviews from our savvy staff.

There are also online sources of basic trail info such as maps:

For more pictures and personal viepoints, check out Arkansas hiking blogs:

  • Trails of Arkansas is Johnnie Chamberlin’s blog, and it is really and truly about the trails of Arkansas. It’s updated regularly, has nice Google Earth maps, and lots of good information.
  • Arkansas Outside has fun posts about biking, hiking, and related sports. Very fun to read. Less information than a lot of others, but some great pictures.
  • A Walk in the Woods isn’t updated any more, but it has lots of pictures and lots of detail for family hiking in the area. Posts mention any aspects of the trails that might be challenging for kids.
  • Midsouth Hiking is another family hiking blog, with inspiring photos. It hasn’t been updated for a while, but it’s posted irregularly, so I hope they’ll be back soon.
  • Ouchita Hiking hasn’t been updated in a while, but it’s still worth a visit. Nice multimedia.
  • A View from the Backroads has more huntin’ and fishin’ than hiking, but it has interesting posts about outdoor issues, and news of upcoming events at the state parks. Man, I missed Archaeology Day!
  • Exploring Northwest Arkansas is a terrific blend of photos and info.
  • Almost Outside has photos, trail reviews, and posts on some other outdoors topics.
  • Northwest Arkansas Environment Central has some problems as a blog; I think the bloggers are a bit tech challenged and can’t really make it do what they want it to do. However, it seems to be the best place to find events related to outdoor Northwest Arkansas.
  • Steve Creek Outdoors has great wildlife photography, though Steve goes further afield than just Arkansas.
  • A Hiking We Will Go has cool snapshots and detailed information about a great variety of trails.
